He was born and raised in Okinawa and has an brother that is three years older than him. Ever since he was a child he looked up to his brother who was a locally famous basket ballplayer. This lead him to also becoming obsessed with the sport.

Ryota, now a sophomore in high school, is a member of the Shohoku High School basketball team and together with his teammates Sakuraki, Rukawa, Akagi, Mutsi, and others, are about to take on the inter-high champions, Sannoh High.
